How Can I Stop My Camera Pictures Shaking Or Being Blurred?

For many video or picture camera enthusiasts, a common problem for beginners is that the camera either takes fuzzy or blurred shots, or in the case of video, there seems to be a shaking of the image on the screen. What causes this, and more importantly, how can this be eliminated? Fortunately, the process is relatively simple. I will concentrate on video cameras, however the same principles may be applied to still photography as well.

In the case of a shot that is taken from a hand held camera, it is very likely that there will be some movement which can be better seen when you are looking at the base of the frame, relative to any object, like a wall, or an object in the room. Whilst you may not notice it so much in the centre of the frame or picture, it will be noticed at the edges. Now, to reduce the possibility of these issues, consider these points:

  • Keep the camera close to your body, if you really must hold it.
  • Where possible, keep the camera on a flat surface, like a table or chair, if you have no tripod.
  • A tripod is best, if you can manage it, and even a cheap one will do, if you are not panning much.
  • The wider the shot, or when you are zoomed out, shake will be reduced dramatically.
  • It is more noticeable if the camera moves, when you are zoomed in hard to an object.

I know that if you are out and about, it is sometimes necessary to just hold the camera, or you may be, as an example, videoing a mountain climb, from the point of view of a climber.

Another point worth noting is that when you are panning, if the tripod is a cheap one, it will probably not 'glide' smoothly, but rather result in quite jerky shots, so try this out before you video a critical moment. However, the overall improvement in shot quality will be more than offset by using a tripod than not, or some other stable surface. Even a table top will be better than a shake hand, but be aware of panning, that there is no drag or noise, if you are using the camera's internal microphone.

In the case of a still picture, it can benefit to also hold the base of the lens when taking your shot, to reduce shake if you are holding the camera in your hand. It does not take a lot of extra effort to make a massive improvement in your video quality (or still pictures for that matter), and the few minutes of fore thought will yield great results to your finished product.
